Nosework is a dog hobby where the dog searches for an object that smells like a hydrolate. Hydrolates include eucalyptus, bay leaf, lavender or combinations of these. Nosework is suitable for dogs of all breeds, sizes and ages, including puppies. This hobby is very enjoyable for dogs that are naturally keen sniffers and also helps to release the dog's energy, internal need for nosework and provides it with fun activities.
For many dogs, using the nose is also a calming activity and has been found to improve the dog's well-being. Searching for target smells requires the dog to use their nose as well as brain power. Nosework can be practiced with a puppy, but we recommend that you first take a puppy course so that the dog understands the basic principles of training.
The sport does not require special skills from the dog or the handler, and once you get going, you can also do your own exercises at home. This will also give you something meaningful to do on a rainy day or even if you are sick and long runs are not possible for a few days. Nosework includes box search, indoor search, outdoor search and vehicle search.
